Title:Sault Ste Marie's Museum
Category:Tourism: Culture
Description:

Our beautiful museum building was scheduled for the grand opening in November the first of 1905, work was still not completed at that time, and the grand opening took place on March 31st 1906 but not as a museum it was our Post Office.

To tell you the truth the Post office was just one component occupying the first floor of the new Dominion Building.

A lot of History involve the the walls of the Building, they were witnesses of the birth of Our City, and how could they forget that... if that was 1912 the moment when the clock was installed in its tower, and since then the clock has been reordering memories to never let us forget who we are and where we go.

The building has so many different stories to tell you, for now we are just going to let you know that it wasn't until 1983 that The Dominion Building became Sault Ste. Marie's museum.

Military Memories

Right to your left coming from the principal entrance, photos, artifacts and uniforms from World War I & II tell the story of the contribution of women and men of the Sault Ste. Marie military. As you read and observe the con-decorative medals that once belonged to our soldiers a feeling of proud and courage make you feel proud of who they were and who you are.

Post office

As we know the Dominion Building was our post office, right in front of the Military gallery you'll find the Post Office gallery section. Details about the building and other artifacts take you back in time and allow you to re live history and understand the transition of the now declared Sault Ste. Marie's Museum.

Durham Gallery

Edwin Durham was the 1st curator of the 49th Field Regiment R.C.A. Historical Society, and in his name a Gallery with rotation of exhibits local and foreign are hosted in the largest room of the museum.

Skylight Gallery

Have you ever wonder how life was long time before Europeans came to the region? Or perhaps you're also wondering what fashion or schools used to be just 30 or 100 years ago ? Well welcome to the second floor of the museum, this section used to be The Customs, Indian, Weights & Measures agent but and also housed the Algonquin Rifles ( a Volunteer Infantry Company formed in Sault-Ste-Marie back in 1865 ) .

Now is called the Skylight Gallery and tells you the story of the City through artifacts, photos, maps and text from prehistoric times to the 60s.

The third floor was the domain or the building's care taker but now exhibits three galleries.

First we have a pictorial display of the early great lakes cruse ships, a brief story of the locks and a scale model of the Edmund Fitzgerald ship, sunk in 1975.

A gallery devoted to the biggest visionary business man of the region, Francis Hector Clergue, shows a large amount of images of Algoma Steel, St. Mary's Paper,Algoma Central Railway, and other companies of his empire.

Last but not least we have The Russel H. Ramsay Sports Hall of fame, honoring one of the most influential media and politics persons in The Soo.

This gallery is devoted to local sports of Sault Ste. Marie from the early 1800s forward. Do you now why the Soo Greyhounds are named like this? Or what about championships, the 49th Gunners basketball team? Well all that and many other information is stored and waiting for you here.
